Video Games Help Bridge the Generation Gap

Recently from Fark, there is coverage on how many people 50 or better are playing video games. Several retirement communities are using the Wii for social and physical recreation. And of course, there is Old Grandma Hardcore herself of Ohio, who can pwn anyone– just ask her grandchildren. Up to 20 percent and growing of gamers are over 50 years of age.

And there are merits to gaming: It maintains sharpness of mind and relieves stress. What could be a better way to enjoy the Golden Years?

Which brings me to this: Growing up, I notice the negative attitudes regarding senior citizens, from the “This is not your Grandfather’s Church” to the subpar nursing homes where we keep Grandma away from our schedules. This Boomer mentality is what Gen X and Y has rejected. Our priorities are upon inclusion and strong relationships– and technology is being used to help achieve this. The gaming culture has grown and matured that it marketed and reached out to seniors.

I am excited about this– as this allows families to actually bond together and have a great time. I’m sick of hearing the pitches of marketed polarization between young adults and seniors. I’m tired of watching and reading about how the kids are rebelling and getting drunk on Spring Break. While the Boomers are slouching towards Gomorrah, we’ll be staying put with our consoles and trying to beat Koopa.
