Area Mom Could Have Made Same Meal At Home For Much Cheaper

NAPERVILLE, IL-During an outing to Chisholm’s Family Restaurant Monday, Sandy Wiersma, 43, repeatedly told her family that she could have made the same food at home for significantly less money.

My rice cooker has been wonderful. The rice is fluffy and not overcooked. It’s perfect. And then for dinner, I’ve used it as a slow cooker and made scalloped potatoes with ham. And it’s easy to clean unlike the crock-pot. It has really r0×0red my s0×0rs. I got the stuff for chicken fried rice tomorrow. That will be another thing on my “I’ve Could Made That for Much Cheaper” list.

Now…if I could convince the Prediger to allow me to build an outdoor Tandoori oven, I’ll have it made. At least right now I can learn to make Vindaloo to go with my steamed rice.

PS: I bet that fictional housewife is bloody hard to shop for birthday presents. And forget about taking her out for anniversary dinners!

My First Rice Cooker

I have not posted a Weeaboo Alert in ages…but today, my gift broke that drought.

The day after Christmas, I got word via Slickdeals and FatWallet about one of Amazon’s Gold Box specials. Months before that, I told Preggie that I’m saving up for a Zojirushi rice cooker so I can cook decent steamed rice regularly. I would go to the nearest Chinese takeout and procure a quart for around 2 bux for dinner. Sometimes, I’d add tomato paste, spices and ground beef to make a “Spanish” rice casserole. I tried cooking rice myself: the result is uneven, with gungy spots and uncooked parts. I tried the slow cooker, but I was clueless about the ratio of rice and water. Preggie preferred a dry finish, not soupy/overcooked. Thus my regular patronage to the takeout until I am able to purchase my rice cooker.

I wanted a Zojirushi ever since I watched the Asian language channel (LA-18 KSCI) in California in the 1990s. That commercial with that white glossy machine, making fluffy rice. How the frell I could convince my mother to take me to an Asian market and get one? I figured that she would not have a clue, and let that go until after college.

Now fast forward many years later. I wanted to get some coupons for the “end-of-the-year” sales when I got word that Amazon was selling a Sanyo 10-cup fuzzy logic micom rice cooker for 60 bux including S&H as part of their Gold Box special. That means it was half off the regular price! I bought it immediately, and I got it today. The beauty is that it uses a PC chip to control the cooking time and keep things nice and warm when ready. It takes out the guesswork out of making rice. For more information, I refer to this 2003 San Francisco Chronicle article.

I’m reading its instruction manual and its recipe booklet authored by PBS chef Martin Yan. And do you all know what that means for me? Break out the wasabi… I’m going to make sushi!

Earmarking for Neophytes

From the Ron Paul Forums, a look at Dr Paul and earmarking:

Before earmarks are ever added, the bill has already passed the committee in Congress. Therefore, the money will be spent regardless. Earmarks are simply a way for a congressman to direct money already approved for spending to a specific project in their district. In Ron Paul’s case, he submits virtually all of them providing they come from a community group or local industry group or local government entity who want to make sure that some money is allocated for a particular project.

Even after earmarking, Dr Paul voted NO. No matter the outcome, the question becomes “To where does the voted funds get sent?” Otherwise, the executive branch determines what to do with the funds.

Blessed Christmas from the Mad Theologian and her Prediger

We wish all of you readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Christmas is very low-key; I made spaghetti on Christmas Eve and we ate the leftovers for today’s lunch. We simply had that craving. I also made some marshmallow fluff-based fudge with walnuts.

Preggie got me a ring holder so I can wash my hands without fear of losing my rings. I got him a bottle of Gucci Pour Homme II after shave.

I’ve first seen it in an issue of Esquire, in those scented inserts. It has tea and bergamot and tobacco (no, NOT burnt tobacco!) scents, and it is manly. I thought: PHWOAR! I must get that for my husband, and it’s a natural match for him. He loved it and desired to obtain its cologne.

By the way: Another cologne that I recommend is the Prada Amber Pour Homme. It’s amber-riffic, with that bergamot mixed in, ending in a leather finish. I got that on my trip to OSCON.

Many of my fellow Confessionals have expressed deep theological sentiments; I echo that too. But why be redundant? They have said it more eloquently than I can: Joy to the World, the Lord has come!

Nothing Sucks like the Cliches of Success…GK Chesterton agrees.

No, this is NOT a lazy dropout manifesto, nor this is some smug anti-consumerist screed. This is about those motivational tapes and books that claims the existence of the “Laws of Success”. I was looking at some financial matter when I found a great critique of the “Rich Man, Poor Dad” books. And as if this is not enough, someone threw in a GK Chesterton essay entitled “The Fallacy of Success”.

You can take your motivational clap trap and throw it all by the VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!

Now…if you really want a lesson, go rent Office Space. (Warning: Contains bad language and aggression against a defective photocopier.)

Passed my Network+ exam!

All these months of preparations and studying and it paid off yesterday. The Prediger was extremely happy and proud of me. At least that part is over…Now I have a Java assignment, and a Web Admin paper to finish.

I Don’t ♥ Huckabee, and here’s why.

See the Arkansas Times article for details.

From the article:

Brownlee then had the board go into executive session, Chastain said. “The governor commented that Wayne Dumond had received, from his perspective, a raw deal, that he was someone from the wrong side of the tracks … and that he had received what he thought was too long a sentence for that type of crime.”

Looks like Governor Huckabee have forgotten that Ashley Stevens had the raw deal, and by his decision to help parole Dumond, Carol Sue Shields, and Sara Andrasek has received raw deals.

This reminded me of the infamous Bush/Quayle ad regarding Dukakis and the furlough programme:

Does “Willie Horton” ring a bell? Let’s see how the Governor responds to that.
