Vino Rosso (#23, 50-1)
All Others (#24, 6-1)

Last year, Always Dreaming appeared in Pool 3, with final odds of 42-1. If you have bet on him in that pool, a $2 bet would have yielded $86.40. Always Dreaming was a new wagering interest in P3 2017.
In 2016, Nyquist was 9-2.
In 2015, American Pharoah was 8-1.
In 2014, California Chrome was 32-1.
In 2013, Orb was 13-1.
In 2012, I’ll Have Another was 21-1.
In 2011, Animal Kingdom was 31-1.

With the exception of Nyquist, the will-pays for each eventual Derby winner are quite generous while the favorite did not manifest themselves as that year’s winners. (A theological proverb: “He who enters a conclave as pope exits as a cardinal.”)

For myself, I would try to place a small bet for these three: Combatant, Catholic Boy, and Mendelssohn. The latter is very classy, winning a Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf race. These three are developing as they go. (And see if you can get a good price on Good Magic. He needed that race– that is, this horse had a lengthy rest after the BC Juvenile. Most horses would shake off the rust when they return and Good Magic should be in better shape.)
